How to Protect your Curls in the Winter- Starting from the Inside

Cold winds, lack of humidity, and extreme temperature changes can often be factors that leave your locks feeling blah.

There are many things we can do to our hair to protect against the cold such as deep conditioning treatments, steaming your hair, or using less heat. But it is important to remember it’s not only the exterior care that can keep your curls shining in the cold but what how you are taking care of your inside.

Omega-3, Vitamin C, and good old H20 are 3 favourite staples in my diet that help to fight frizz and flat hair from the inside out.

Omega-3 is an essential fat your body cannot produce naturally. It provides proteins and nutrients to your hair follicles that prevent inflammation- adding shine to the hair and diminishing dullness. Typically sourced from fish oils, there are now plenty of plant-based options available for those who are vegan or vegetarian.

Vitamin C- Make sure you are adding dark leafy greens and citrus to your diet because this powerful antioxidant increases the level of collagen in your body. This will repair tissues and strengthen your curls preventing breakage and split ends.

Finally, the simplest way to fight frizz in the cold months and yet sometimes I completely forget to do is…  drink water! Something new I found out recently was that water makes up almost 25% of the weight of a single strand of hair. Much like my skin, I visibly notice my hair becomes dull and dry when I am not getting enough water. When it comes to H20 it’s pretty simple, water prevents dehydration and adds moisture to your locks.
