Are all Alcohols Bad for your Hair?

When I first started my curly hair journey, I stopped using products with sulfates, silicones, and parabens. I also thought I had to cut out alcohols because the name alone I associated with something that would dry my hair out. But not all alcohols are bad for your hair!

There are fatty alcohols otherwise known as long-chain alcohols that come from natural sources (for example coconut oil) that can add moisture and help to detangle your curls.

Here are the “Good Alcohols” that are safe for your hair:

Cetyl alcohol
Cetearyl alcohol
Stearyl alcohol
Lauryl alcohol

There are however alcohols us curlies should avoid using because while they help the hair to dry quickly, they also cause more frizz by making the hair’s cuticles rough and not allowing your hair to absorb moisture.

Here is a list of " Bad Alcohols" (short-chain alcohols) to avoid:

Ethanol alcohol
Ethyl alcohol
Propanol alcohol
Alcohol denat
Isopropyl alcohol
Isopropanol alcohol
Benzyl alcohol
